A pickup game
BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. — Last night Poker Cats Arena convened its first Low Stakes Poker game of the year — it was a nice turnout on such short notice.
The game originally grew out of meeting up with 23skiddoo after work at Taco Mac. When Surf said he’d come by, the game was on! Soon we had Empire and Brigid and Josh with Sham sneaking by after work to try to find Kuro’s secret choco chip cookie recipe.
Soon it was easy to see why Skiddoo wanted such a gathering — we are his fish! He quickly made work of an Empire buy-in with a 1-card quad hand. He made a boat with trips in the hole in Seven Stud/8 and got me and Surf in a hand that I shouldn’t have played.
It was Baduci, that sick hybrid of 2-7 Triple Draw and Badugi that almost made me late for the Winter Bloggers tourney in Vegas.
I had 3-5-7 rainbow so I thought I would be golden for 3 draws to a best 2-7 hand or the pot-splitting Badugi hand.
Trouble was, I caught enough of a hand to screw me. It was all-in by me, Skiddoo and Surf and I had the worst of it with a 9-8 2-7 hand and an 8-7 Badugi. Skiddoo had the best Triple Draw hand and the best Badugi! with a 9-6-4-3-2 or something like that.
Surf had a slightly better badugi than me, an 8-6.
The other day I almost posted this nugget that I read in Negreanu’s 2-7 Triple Draw section in Super/System 2 but should have taken to heart myself — that a 9-high TD is rarely a good hand. So many kicker problems. (I didn’t even have the 9-high when I pushed on the turn with my 8-high badugi, I caught the 9 on the third draw).
Despite the carnage, I ended up down only $7.90 for the night (at one point I was down $18 in the game).
It was fun, though. Later, me, Sham and Skiddoo went to Manuel’s for a few more beers and seeing Obama and Huckabee win in Iowa. Of course, ESPN didn’t break in to let us know during the Fiesta Bowl. lol
Today I’m up in north Georgia covering a story about a search for a hiker who has disappeared. Even earlier I was in Decatur for the first appearance of a guy accused of killing his father and grandfather. The news never stops.
